Tilt-shift miniature effect for Final Cut Pro

Overview

Miniaturize is a Final Cut Pro plugin that creates the tilt-shift effect, making real scenes look like tiny scale models, in a matter of seconds.

It blurs everything outside a focus area, so only a band or spot of the frame stays sharp. You get three focus areas: a large rectangle, a circle and a small rectangle. Only the main one is on by default.

Place, rotate, feather and scale each focus area in the Inspector or with the on-screen controls in the viewer. Turn on an outline to see exactly where it is.

Finish the look with contrast and saturation, choose Gaussian or Defocus blur, and lower the frame rate for a stop-motion feel.

Features
  • Three focus areas: a large rectangle, a circle and a small rectangle, each with its own position, rotation, feather and scale.
  • On-screen controls: drag the focus area's position and rotation right in the viewer.
  • Two kinds of blur: Gaussian Blur, or the more realistic Defocus Amount.
  • Miniature color: Contrast, Focus Area Saturation and Global Saturation make scenes look like painted models.
  • Decrease Framerate: lower the frame rate for a stop-motion look.
  • Isolate Focus Areas and outlines: desaturate everything outside the focus areas, or show an outline while you set them up.
How to use
  1. In the Effects browser sidebar, click My FCPeffects (show the sidebar if it is hidden).
  2. Drag Miniaturize onto your clip. Shots taken from high up, looking down, work best.
  3. Move and rotate the main focus area with the on-screen controls, then set Focus Feather and Focus Scale.
  4. Raise Gaussian Blur or Defocus Amount for the blur outside the focus area.
  5. Boost Contrast and saturation, and turn on Decrease Framerate if you want a stop-motion feel.
Requirements
  • Works with all versions of Final Cut Pro from the last 5+ years, including Final Cut Pro 11 and the current Final Cut Pro 12
  • Works with the current versions of macOS
  • Runs on Intel Macs and natively on Apple silicon (M1 and later)
  • No Apple Motion needed
  • Works with every resolution Final Cut Pro supports, including 4K and 8K
  • Install on any Mac you own that’s signed in to the same Apple account (Apple allows up to 5 Macs)
FAQ

What kind of footage works best?

Shots looking down on a scene from up high, like streets, harbors and highways, look most like miniature models.

Can I have more than one sharp area?

Yes. Turn on Focus Area 2 (a circle) and Focus Area 3 (a small rectangle) alongside the main focus area.

What is the difference between Gaussian Blur and Defocus?

Defocus looks more like a real lens, but it needs more processing power and render time. Gaussian blur is faster.

Can I make it look like stop motion?

Yes. Turn on Decrease Framerate and set the Framerate control.

Is Miniaturize part of the MEGA BUNDLE?

Yes. It's in the MEGA BUNDLE: all of our plugins (over 80), a $1,600+ value, for $80.

Is there a deal on individual plugins?

Yes. Buy one, get one free on every plugin, applied automatically.

How do I install it?

Instant download. Just double-click the installer. It only takes a couple minutes.
