Skin smoothing for Final Cut Pro

Overview

Skin Smoother is a Final Cut Pro plugin that smooths and softens skin while leaving the rest of the shot untouched. It's quick to set up and easy to use.

It works with Final Cut Pro's built-in color mask. Sample the skin tones right from your clip, and Skin Smoother only affects those areas. Then fine-tune the smoothing, brightness, contrast, saturation and color of the skin, with a mix control for each one.

Using Final Cut Pro 12.3 or later? You can also use Final Cut Pro's Auto Mask. Click the mask icon, choose Auto Mask and pick Skin. It finds the skin for you in every frame, so Skin Smoother only works there. Use it with the color mask or instead of it, and check the result with View Masks.

Rendering is fast. Like all of our plugins, Skin Smoother runs on Intel Macs and natively on Apple silicon (M1 and later). The extended demo shows before and after on several faces and skin tones, and the short tutorial shows how easy it is.

How to use

In the Effects browser sidebar, click My FCPeffects (show the sidebar if it's hidden). Skin Smoother 2 is at the top. Drag it onto your clip.
In the Inspector, hover over Skin Smoother 2, click the mask icon and choose Add Color Mask.
Click and drag on the skin in the viewer to sample it. Shift-drag adds a tone. Option-drag removes one.
Raise Skin.Smoothing, then use Smoothing.Mix to keep it natural. Around 50 is a good start. Too much can look unrealistic.
Fine-tune Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Softness as needed.
Optional, Final Cut Pro 12.3 or later: click the mask icon (the person with a sparkle) next to the eyedropper and choose Auto Mask.
Check Skin (or Skin and Face), then click Add Auto Mask.
Use the View Masks menu to check the selection.
Already sampled skin with the eyedropper? Leave it in place, or remove it and let Auto Mask do the work.

FAQ

Will it smooth the whole frame?

No. You sample the skin with a color mask, so only the skin is smoothed.

Will it blur hair and background?

No. Skin Smoother only smooths the area you mask. Mask the skin with the color mask or Auto Mask (Skin) and hair, clothing and background stay sharp. Results depend on your footage, so check with View Masks.

How do I keep it looking natural?

Use a light touch. Skin.Smoothing and Smoothing.Mix work together so you can dial it back.

Do I need Auto Mask?

No. The color mask still works as before. Auto Mask is an extra option in Final Cut Pro 12.3 or later if you'd rather not sample skin tones by hand.

Which Final Cut Pro version do I need?

Any version of Final Cut Pro from the last 5+ years, including Final Cut Pro 11 and the current Final Cut Pro 12. The Auto Mask option needs Final Cut Pro 12.3 or later.
