Overview

Better Black & White is a Final Cut Pro plugin for black and white conversions you can fine-tune, because not all black and white is created equal.

Mix the red, green and blue channels to decide how each color in your shot turns into gray, the way a photographer uses color filters with black and white film.

Then set brightness and contrast, remap the tones to a color, add sepia, or soften the image.

The result is a black and white look that suits the shot, rather than one flat desaturated version.

How to use

In the Effects browser sidebar, click My FCPeffects (show the sidebar if it is hidden).
Drag Better Black & White onto your clip.
Adjust the Red, Green and Blue Channel controls to brighten or darken parts of the shot. Turn on Allow Values > 1 for stronger changes.
Set Brightness and Contrast.
Add Remap Color or Sepia for a toned look, or lower Amount to bring back some color.

Desaturating treats every color the same. The channel controls let you choose how bright reds, greens and blues become, so skies, skin and foliage separate better.

Can I make a sepia or tinted image?

Yes. Use Sepia, or Remap Color for a tint in any color.

Can I keep a little color?

Yes. Lower Amount to blend the original color back in.

Does it work on green screen footage?

Yes. It works on any clip in Final Cut Pro.
