Overview

Vertical Video Solutions makes it easy to use vertical and other non-widescreen clips in a Final Cut Pro project.

Fill the empty sides with a blurred copy of your clip, a split background, a solid color or a different clip. Or zoom the clip to fill the screen.

Add a border or a smartphone camera look, and animate scale and position without keyframes. It's a title layer, so one copy covers many clips at once.

Features

Presets: Fullscreen Background, Split Background and Zoom to Fullscreen.
Common aspect ratios: 9:16, 16:9, 3:4, 4:3, 2:3, 3:2, 4:5, 5:4, 5:7, 7:5, 3:5, 5:3 and 1:1.
Background styles: blur, color, tint, solid color, pixelate, circles, crystallize, halftone, stripes and negative, or drop in another clip.
Overlays: a border or a smartphone camera look, with drop shadow controls.

How to use

In the Titles browser sidebar, click My FCPeffects, then Vertical Video Solutions (show the sidebar if it's hidden).
Drag a preset above your clip, and trim it to match. Stretch it across several clips to cover them all.
Select it and open the Title tab in the Inspector.
Set Media.Aspect.Ratio to match your clip. The Info tab shows its size (1080 / 1920 = 0.5625).
Pick an Overlay.Type and style the background. Turn off Instructions before you export.

How do I find my clip's aspect ratio?

Select the clip and open the Info tab in the Inspector. Divide the two numbers (1080 / 1920 = 0.5625) and pick the matching value.

Can I use a different clip for the background?

Yes. Turn on Drop.Zone and choose any clip for the background.

Can I animate it without keyframes?

Yes. Set Start.Scale, End.Scale and the Move controls, and smooth the motion with Move.Ease.

Does it work with square and 4:3 clips too?

Yes. It works with vertical and other non-widescreen clips in a 16:9 project.
