Blur faces and objects in Final Cut Pro

Overview

Facial Blur is a Final Cut Pro plugin that isolates any part of your video, a face, a license plate or an object, either to obscure it or to draw attention to it.

Place a mask over the area, then set its position, rotation, X and Y scale, roundness and feather. Inside it, use blur, defocus, pixelate, twirl or a solid color.

Invert the mask to blur everything except your subject. That can also simulate a shallow depth of field, or spotlight one person with Global Darkness.

An optional outline, with its own opacity, width and color, frames the area you are highlighting.

How to use

In the Effects browser sidebar, click My FCPeffects (show the sidebar if it is hidden).
Drag Facial Blur onto your clip.
Set Position, X and Y Scale, Roundness and Feather to cover the face or object.
Choose how to hide it: raise Blur Amount, Defocus Amount or Pixellate, or use a solid color.
If the subject moves, keyframe Position and Scale in the Inspector.

FAQ

Can it follow a moving face?

Yes, with keyframes. Animate the mask's Position and Scale in the Inspector as the subject moves. There is no automatic tracking.

Can I pixelate instead of blur?

Yes. Use Pixellate, or a solid color, twirl or defocus.

Can I blur everything except one person?

Yes. Turn on Invert Mask. This also simulates a shallow depth of field.

Can I blur more than one face?

Yes. Apply Facial Blur more than once to the same clip, one for each face.
